Many languages can be grouped into families with common ancestors, whether recorded, like Latin and Sanskrit, or inferred, like many others, like Proto-Indo-European, Proto-Uralic, Proto-Austronesian, ... But the farther back in time, the harder it is to infer, and the less accepted such inferences are. This tier list is about the farther-back "macrofamilies" that are not generally accepted.
